Landing a client is just the beginning.

The rest is systems. And if you don’t have a system for what happens next, you’re making your life too dang hard.

Here’s how I handle it (and why you should, too).

1. Kick Off Every Project the Same Way

"So you hooked two big clients at the same time…now what?"

Clients love when you show up knowing exactly what to do.

A messy onboarding process causes projects to fail and clients to have bad experiences.

→It doesn’t help that most of your clients don’t really know what they need.

→And if they do know what they need, they don’t know how to get it.

That’s why you shouldn’t work with clients who want to tell you how to do your job. Those clients are looking for freelancers.

They’re not looking for you or me.

Instead, I let clients tell me what they need (usually sales). Then, I guide them through a proven process that I've used to get the same results before.

I kick off every single project off with a Breakthrough Interview.

It’s a nearly 2-hour deep dive into who they are and why anyone should care. I pull out their real pains, their best opportunities, and right next steps.

It’s really a paid discovery session on steroids. Lots of solopreneurs do this part for free. (you shouldn’t).

Your client is better served when you’re a hired gun for the discovery. The old way of just learning enough to draft a proposal is no good.

Because those solutions are tailored to you, not them.

After a couple of hours interviewing them, I know exactly what they need. I can then start planning next steps.

Just like I've done it a million times before.

I’m not scrambling to figure things out. I ask the right questions from the start and my breakthrough interview tells me everything I need to know.

2. Multiple Clients, Same Process

“A Fractional CMO and an Email Marketing gig? Aren’t those completely different?”

After I onboard them the same way each time, the systems don’t stop there.

I know these two new high-ticket clients look totally different.

→Fractional CMO for a B2B company

→Email Marketing for a High-Ticket Coach

But in the end, they want the same thing.

→ A sales system that actually works

→ Messaging that attracts the right customers

→ Repeatable systems on autopilot

Niching by “offer” is more powerful than niching by industry.

I don’t do “marketing for everyone.” I solve a specific problem with a repeatable framework.

"Upwork’s always been a race to the bottom"

"It’s even more lowball projects and scammy offers than before."

"Garbage platform."

A couple years ago, I was getting 2, 4, sometimes 10 project invitations from Upwork clients per day. (ok, the 10 in one day only happened once.)

While others were hating on the Wal-Mart of freelance platforms, I was raking it in.

Then it seemed like overnight… invitations dried up, the algorithms changed.

Suspicious job posts. The whole connect system.

Too many things about Upwork changed.

Identifying as a ‘Freelancer’

Like a lot of the more experienced solos on the platform, I moved on. Upwork was for freelancers, not experts.

Nothing against freelancers, they're just at a different place on their journey.

Do Experts Have a Place on Upwork?

By this time, I had built a client list outside Upwork, so I stopped logging into the platform and mostly ignored it.

If you asked me about it, I’d probably say what everyone else is saying.

"It’s not worth the time anymore."

In fact I've been saying this to you since the start of this newsletter.

I truly believed Upwork had become a waste of time if you’re really good at what you do.

So I tried a little experiment.

Is there Still a ‘Hidden Lever’ for Great Clients on Upwork?

The Experiment

**Could I still cut through the noise and snag a big-ticket project on Upwork?

The ‘hidden lever’ I use boils down to knowing where to look and what to look for.

I had 1,200 connects stacked up over the last two years, let’s put ‘em to work and see.

1. I found 5-10 decent looking projects with high-ticket intentions. (10 min.)

2. Created a proposal template that positioned me as an expert, not a freelancer. (having a template process makes it easier to send multiple proposals faster). (20 min.)

3. Tailored a template to each project. (5 min each)

Then I hit send. With no expectations, I went on about my day.

The Results

**Within a few days, I landed not one but two primo client offers.

Clients Almost Instantly

Surprisingly… I only sent 5 proposals to land two great projects.

(There was a third prospect conversation too, but after an intro call, I don’t think we’re a fit.)

Don’t Struggle on Upwork.

If you’re not getting clients, how can you lean on your expertise to make the platform work better for you?

Upwork’s not dead. Instead, I realized… like every other platform, they want to get theirs too. They want you playing the game, using your connects, using the platform.

You just need to use it smarter than everyone else.

So if you’re struggling, try something different. You might just need a few small tweaks somewhere.

3 myths that keep you from trying it out

“Upwork is only for cheap clients.”
→ Not true, which I proved to myself last week. High-value clients exist there. They're not the ones posting $6/hr gigs. You need to know what to look for and a process for filtering the ones more suited to what you offer and how much you charge.

“It’s too saturated/competitive now.”
→ Sure, if you’re blending in with the crowd. If you position yourself as an expert at something specific, you stand out.

“It’s all spam and AI job posts now.”
→ There’s junk, for sure. But there are also serious businesses with serious budgets. I found two big-budget projects in about a week. You just have to know where to look.

Here’s a simple starter framework (steal this!). I use it land better Upwork clients.

1️⃣ Be selective.
You want to curate the high-ticket projects. Take a few minutes, filter the job feed to meet your criteria and rate.

Don't just read the project title and description. Check the details, their feedback history, and everything Upwork lets you see. It's not much, but vetting new potential clients makes all the difference, especially on Upwork.

You're looking for ways to qualify that they're legit and need an expert like you (i call it ‘high-ticket intentions’).

Pay attention to red flags or you'll be sorry. (Stay tuned for more on what red flags to look for, that’s its own post.) But the obvious ones don’t need to be pointed out. If it's clear they're looking for cheap or someone to push around, keep it moving.

2️⃣ Write consultant-level proposals.
Save the “Hi! I’d love to work with you!" for the freelancers. Instead, show value, fast.

The first 2 lines of your proposal makes or breaks it, you want to shake things up, stand out. This is what's called your hook.

3️⃣ Optimize your profile for higher-tier clients.
Experts get hired. Freelancers chase.

The best clients care less about where you went to school and more about who you've worked with and the results you got for them.

If you're just getting started, whip out a couple case studies of things you've done in the past.

If you've worked with a big name client, add their logo to your portfolio section, summarize what you did for them into one sentence and use it in your profile and proposals. “I recently helped [someone] get [some result] in less than [some timeframe].”

Last, make sure your profile is about them, the client, and what they get when they hire you. Try to eliminate as many instances of “I” as possible. Avoid listing out everything you know how to do.

4️⃣ Have a proven framework.
Clients pay for predictable results, from pros. The ones I’m talking about aren’t looking for side-hustle level skills.

Showing up with frameworks you've used in the past is how you separate yourself from regulars. Especially if you can show how you’ve used specific frameworks to get the result they want. This is where the High ROE comes in.

5️⃣ Use Upwork as a tool, not a business model.
It’s great for access to clients from all over the world, but don’t build your whole business there.

Send a couple proposals that look like a perfect fits, shake your money-maker and tell em why they need you. It might take a couple tries to see what lands.

If you show them what they want, and they trust that you can bring them over the finish line, you're as good as hired.

There’s a Place for Experts on Upwork, If You Use it Smartly

The platform has definitely changed over the last couple years.

But high-ticket work is still very available.

You just have to...

1. know how to position yourself.

2. know what clients actually want.

3. stop competing with freelancers.

Then you can start getting a Return on your Experience.

If you're like a lot of people who have one, you wish you didn’t.

Not because you want to sit on the couch all day and do nothing. Maybe you do.

But it’s also because the corporate ladder feels more like a treadmill.

Or worse, like an airport conveyor belt. Moving you, the baggage, to a set destination. You’re mostly ok with it because it’s a good job. So you’ll happily go where they're taking you, right?

Until someone decides you're no longer needed.

Because then you're ejected from everything you know. With zero control over it.

Ejection Buttons

People with years of valuable experience don’t have the certainty our parents did. They're worried about the Ageism Ejector button.

Companies doing mass layoffs are firing the highest earners first. The ones who happen to be the most experienced. That's the Cheaper Options Ejector.

There's another ejector button, this one with your own finger on it. It's because you're so exhausted after a day at work that even weekends don’t help anymore. The Burnout Ejector.

If you're nodding, it's because you've spent years, maybe decades, honing your skills, delivering results, and playing the game.

And you’re starting to wonder: What’s next?

It feels like the game is rigged. Where corporate needs to squeeze every drop of value from you.

Then, they move on to someone younger, cheaper, or shinier.

It's not personal. Ya know, it's just business.

Does that mean you have to stick around for the final act? Does your next chapter involve waiting for the other shoe to drop?

Take Control

What if you used your skills, contacts, and reputation to create something all your own?

That’s what 'solopreneurship' is all about.

No more performance reviews. No more waiting for someone to notice your value. No more office politics or daily meetings in the conference room.

Instead, you get to decide.

• What you work on.

• Who you work with.

• How much you get paid.

Sound too good to be true? It’s not.

Of course it’s not magic either. You need a plan. But you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Here are 10 take-action steps you can do now, while you still have a 9-5.

1. Audit Your Experience

   All it takes is 15 minutes. List out your top skills, accomplishments, and what you’re known for in your current 9-5 role.

2. Curate Your LinkedIn Profile

   Update your LinkedIn headline and bio. It should show your expertise without saying you're open for new clients. "Helping [industry or skill] teams improve operations for faster, better results." -- as a solopreneur, this is your only chance to be bland, so enjoy it!

3. Test the Waters (Without Jumping Ship)

   If you're ready and comfortable, set up a profile on a relevant 'talent marketplace'. Think Patreon, Upwork, Toptal or Bark. You can create a profile and offer a small, one-time service. Something you can polish and deliver fast, all while keeping your day job. (see step 6)

4. Build Your Network Quietly

   It's easier to build a loyal following when they don’t feel you’re selling something. And everyone on LinkedIn has something to sell, in some form or another. You don't. Engage on LinkedIn. Comment on posts in your industry. Don’t overthink it, just share your thoughts and connect with others. Ask questions in the comments. This builds your visibility without asking for anything or announcing your plans.

5. Think of Your Dream Client

   Who do you want to work with? What industry are they in? What problem can you solve for them? This may change a thousand more times. But, you must claim someone to target. Your solo journey (and the success that follows) will be less linear if you don't.

6. Brainstorm a Small Service You Can Deliver Fast

   Think of a simple, low-commitment service for your new target clients. For example, you could offer a strategy session, audit, or consultation. Something you can deliver with minimal prep. Test the waters with it. Use my AI-Boosted service offer polisher tool if you need help. (google doc, no sign up)

7. Set a Tiny Goal This Week

   Momentum builds confidence. So, take one step toward solo freedom this week. What's one of these steps you can accomplish? Make it something doable like grabbing my AI service offer tool, posting on LinkedIn once, send a connection request, or writing out your headline.

8. Block Out 'CEO Time' for Action

   Schedule 1-2 hours per week if you can. Don't just think about making the transition, take action. But do it productively. Your imposter syndrome and procrastination cause you to overthink. So read, plan, or execute. Write your service offer, polish it, brainstorm where you'll get clients. Set up your profile on a talent marketplace. Protect this time like it’s a meeting with the boss. Because it is. You’re the boss now.

9. Follow Solopreneurs Who've Done It

   Learn how they did it. Subscribe to newsletters or follow people who’ve already made the leap, especially in the same industry or role . Watch how they position themselves and talk about their journey, the joys and the pains. Read their old posts for inspiration on their transition.

10. Get Guidance

    If you’re stuck, don’t overthink it. Message someone who’s ahead of you on this journey. Ask a question or share your curiosity. People are more generous with their advice than you might expect.

To take the first steps toward your solo career, you have to show up.

Of course, if you want to build a solo business without raising any red flags, you have to do it smart.

Take one small step at a time.

After all this talk about telling you how to get off the platform, I decided to use some of my 1200 connects and send out a few proposals.

I wanted to see what I could report back to you.

You have to understand… I haven’t sent an Upwork proposal in I don’t know how long. Years maybe?

That’s because I relied on invitations for 4 years.

10 in one day, once.

About 2 years ago, that steady pipeline of new projects dried up.

Not sure what changed specifically. The platform changed, the markets changed, the world changed.

And AI changed everything

So who knows?

Thankfully I’d built an off-platform system for getting and keeping clients that no longer relied on Upwork’s invitations.

So I haven’t been slogging through billions of connects to find that ‘diamond in the rough’ client.

Well this week I decided to try it out after so long.

I wanted to get a new client on Upwork.

I just wanted to land one high-ticket client. (to see if they were still out there on the platform)

But I landed two.

Used a few connects, sent out 7 or 8 proposals. Lo and behold, I landed 2 high-ticket clients on Upwork this week.

The $200/hour type.

But I've wasted too much time trying to figure out and fix things myself in the past.

Like the time my daughter got the electric (toy) car for her birthday and simply had to test-drive it in the yard, immediately.

She’d never ridden in one of these before so I kept a close eye. I remember it had rained heavy the day before, so the warmth from today’s sun was even more welcome.

She was cruising along just fine when…

In our big, wide, flat backyard, her and her tonka truck found the only mud puddle from yesterday’s rain.

Stuck.

The wheels spun and spun as she rocked herself and the car back and forth, kicking clumps of dirt up onto her cheeks and the hood of her sweet, sweet ride.

It was a mess.

And she couldn’t get out either. She was surrounded by a huge mud puddle moat. One with its own shoreline of quicksand-like mud at the borders.

No matter what she tried or how hard she rocked, she couldn't get the car moving.

Of course she was getting more and more frustrated. (and honestly, who could blame her.)

Solidly stuck.

No way around it, she needed help.

So, I walked over, wiped the mud off her cheek, lifted the rear wheels out of the mud, and set her back down on solid ground.

“Vroooooom!” Away she went again.

If not for the mud on everything, you'd never know it happened.

Sometimes we’re all the toy car.

Stuck. Spinning our wheels. Frustrated.

And sometimes we just need someone to lift us out of the mud.

For solos, that “mud” can be confusing services, bland products, messy systems…

Or just a lack of direction and certainty.

Your problems aren’t as unique as you think they are.

Someone has experience solving them. Just like I’ve gotten myself and others unstuck from the mud before.

So when my daughter got stuck, there was nothing to figure out. I knew what to do.

The DIY trap.

At the heart of this Q&A was the discussion on LinkedIn and about why attracting clients beats chasing them (31:00).

I offered this thought…

Someone asked: “Does being a freelancer on Upwork have to mean cheap labor?” So we discussed who the Upwork client is vs. the client they're trying to attract.

We talked about how specific messaging can reposition you entirely. It's all in how you present yourself as an expert, not the bargain option (9:49).

Here, I suggested a few disruptive strategies.

• If you don't know what to talk about on LinkedIn, create a LinkedIn newsletter. Weird thought, I know. (31:00). But it's easier than you think.

• If you want to transcend being seen as a "freelancer", have a process. Don't just take orders from clients. Create a product ladder, like a workshop or VIP sprint, to guide clients through a clear process. (37:44). YOUR process.

• What if you made your LinkedIn content solve one single problem for your particular client? Your profile and posts should quickly show what you're about (39:22).

Look. If you want to handpick clients off LinkedIn...

Why are you hesitating on posting?

Post anything to get started. No one's going to see it. Not at first anyway.

“It’s just not my thing,” one person admitted (58:00).

I understand this totally. Especially with awkwardly hilarious subreddits like r/LinkedInLunatics.

Still. I pushed back here.

I suggested you don't need to be a daily poster or a LinkedIn lunatic to get a few clients from LinkedIn. A bit of upfront effort and intention will serve you well.

“Even having a few evergreen posts that speak directly to your ideal client’s needs can make a huge difference.” (55:19)

Is what you have something clients want?

One person was targeting small, foreign tech firms. The ones who want to expand into the U.S. market.

That's an in-demand service for sure.

I urged him to improve his LinkedIn profile. The updates should show he can bridge the gap and get non-U.S. companies sales from the sweet peach of U.S. commerce. (55:25).

The Upwork trickle

Of course, we touched on strategies for getting clients on Upwork (42:20). “Upwork’s changed and it’s harder to attract high-quality clients there.”

I shared how my invitations went from 'flowing like a faucet' a year ago to an occasional trickle. Thankfully I don't rely on it. In fact, I'm probably only taking around a client per quarter from the platform.

I don't mind it running in the background for a client here and there.

The difference is, I used to get 2, 4, up to 10 invitations in one day. Now what's more typical is an invitation per week. I'm talking about one real invitation to real projects, not the fake or irrelevant ones which feel more like the norm these days. Those are still plentiful.

There's still plenty of opportunity for people on Upwork. It just depends where you are in your solo journey and what you're trying to do.

My advice is to use Upwork if you want. Setup and maintain a profile, but don't let it be where you put all your effort and focus.

Get proactive elsewhere instead of putting all your eggs in that basket.

LinkedIn is one option. It doesn't have to be LinkedIn but if you're going to attract new customers online, where are you going to do it?

It doesn’t show up as the fear and doubt it really is. No, it gets one over on you by dressing up as hard work.

You know the drill.

And suddenly, months go by. Your new offer, your website content, your social posts... they're still sitting there, in your head (or buried in a google doc), invisible to the people who need it.

Waiting for a day that will never come... the day it’s perfect.

Perfection is just procrastination in disguise.

I learn this the hard way. Not learned, meaning I'm actively learning and practicing this too.

Don’t overthink it.

Do it messy first. Don't go back to the drawing board on a hunch. That's how you never launch your next thing.

• Aim for “good enough" that it will help someone you know.

• Get it live. Get it working. Then, make it fantastic.

A client doesn’t care if your offer is 92% perfect or 100% (how would they even know?).

They just want you to solve their problem.

Action = Data

Action beats perfection.

Action is perfection.

Put something into the world. Observe. Adjust. Repeat.

Perfection can wait. Progress can’t.

You’re going on a date. Instead of getting fancy and looking nice, you show up in pajama flannels, hair unbrushed, mumbling something about being “multifaceted.”

How do you think that date is going to end?

Exactly.

Gotta Have Game

Like dating, getting clients means you need to...

• Get their attention (make them notice you).

• Show your best traits (make them like you).

• Make them feel safe (so they trust you).

Just like a date, it’s all about seduction.

A lot of solos show up to clients with bedhead and a list of things they could do.

“Let’s see… I’m good at design, marketing, social media, and maybe some writing if you need it? What are you into?”

That’s not seduction. That’s desperation.

Packaging Seduction

Think about the last time you got excited about someone. Was it because they listed every single thing they've ever done on a napkin?

Nope. It’s because they showed up with your flavor of polished and confident, and they focused on you.

Dating and getting new clients might require different strategies, sure. But, the idea is the same.

Your clients want to be seduced. They want to feel wanted and like you were meant for the moment.

They want to know you understand them and have exactly what they need.

Without packaging yourself up properly, here’s what happens…

You stay single (aka clientless). Confused clients walk away.

You attract the wrong “dates”. Underpaid, high-drama gigs that drain your energy.

You become the backup plan. Jacks-of-all-trades get ghosted for someone better.

How to Create Your Seductive Offer

Your services and offers reflect your personality. Let them shine, but not all at once.

The best seducers don't say more. They say the right stuff at the right moments.

Here’s how to make your offer seductive:

Speak directly to their pain.
Imagine on a date they say, “I’ve been feeling stuck lately.” You show empathy, ask questions and when the time is right say, “I know exactly how to help with that.” What’s that specific problem you solve?

Paint ‘Before’ vs. ‘After’.
What’s the before-and-after of working with you? Promise a clear change like “Before: confusion. After: clarity, confidence, and clients banging down your door.”

Show them the instant benefits.
Instead of bragging, show them a quick-win or a time when you helped someone just like them. Give them a reason to lean in and whisper “Tell me more…”

You Already Know How This Works

Think back to your last great date.

Did they mumble through their intro? Were they unsure of themselves? Was it someone who didn't know what they wanted?

You’d never swipe right on someone who says, “I’m just kind of here, I guess.”

It’s the part of solopreneur-ing no one like to talk about. You’re not sure why it sucks so bad because you’re great at your thing… design, writing, coaching, whatever.

But if you can’t land clients on a regular basis, your business doesn’t grow.

Most solos keep making this same mistake. The one that keeps them stuck in a feast-or-famine cycle we all know so well.

You’ll be happy to hear it’s totally fixable.

My 'Invisible Expert' Phase

Back in 2018 I was stuck in what I call the "Invisible Expert" phase.

I knew I was good at buyer journeys and conversions. I had the skills, the past clients portfolio, and definitely the hustle. But did anyone seem to notice?

No matter how much I posted on socials, networked online, or revamped one of my profiles, it felt like I was shouting into the void.

Clients weren’t reaching out. My inbox was empty.

At first, I blamed the platforms. Maybe LinkedIn wasn’t the right place. Maybe I wasn’t active enough on Upwork. Maybe I needed to run ads on Facebook.

So I doubled down and spread myself thin across every platform I could think of, constantly tweaking profiles, applying to projects and firing off pitches.

The same results though. Nada.

It was frustrating, exhausting, and honestly, it shook my confidence a little. I started questioning if I’d made the right choice staying solo.

That's when it hit me that the problem wasn’t where I was looking for clients. The problem was how I was presenting myself.

I was treating client-getting like a numbers game.

Post more, pitch more, and eventually, something would stick. But, I needed to focus on the foundation. I needed a clear, irresistible offer that made clients want to work with me.

That realization changed everything. And it can for you too.

It’s how I went from scrambling to pitch anyone and everyone to clients coming to me. And I didn’t have to shout into the void anymore.

If you’re not sure where your next client is coming from, don’t worry… you’re not alone.

Here’s the 3 biggest, most common mistakes solopreneurs make in getting clients (and how to fix em).

Mistake #1: Offering Too Much Variety

Remember my restaurant analogy... the one with a 15-page menu filled with 200 mediocre things? Lasagna, sushi, tacos… everything under the sun.

How good do you think any of it is?

It’s how potential clients feel when they look at your long list of services.

When you offer everything, you confuse them. And confused clients don’t buy.

Instead of saying, "I do graphic design, social media management, and email marketing," say, "I write high-converting emails for online businesses."”

The difference is... One of these sounds like an expert. The other sounds like you’re confused about what you really do and not an expert at anything.

Mistake #2: Treating 'Client-Getting' Like Sock Laundry

That feeling when you’re wearing your last pair of clean socks.

The one where you know laundry is due soon. Unless you do it, you'll have to choose how clean to be.

Wouldn't it be nice to stop pulling socks from weird corners of your room? Wondering if they've been worn, and for how long. Should you try to stretch another day out of them?

It’s stressful. It’s unnecessary. And it’s entirely avoidable if you had a simple system for keeping up with the laundry to begin with.

A system where a little bit at a time goes a long way.

Client-getting works the same.

Too many solos only focus on it when they’re in panic mode. They'll finish a project with nothing lined up. So you frantically (and without any clear strategy at all) scroll job boards, post on LinkedIn, or buy Upwork connects.

It’s exhausting. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

A repeatable system. It lets you focus on your sweet spot. No more stress about what comes next. Bonus: your socks and your sanity stay clean.

Mistake #3: Focusing on Where to Find Clients Instead of How to Attract Them

Jumping between platforms to get clients is like fishing with no bait.

At the water's edge, you scratch your head. You think, "maybe I should try that other lake," or "what if I moved to a different spot on the river?"”

Without the right bait, it doesn’t matter where you cast your line. You’re not catching anything at any of them.

“I’m not getting clients on Upwork. Should I try Fiverr? What about LinkedIn?”

It’s not about where you fish. It’s about what you’re offering.

A clear and compelling offer is the best bait. It works anywhere: LinkedIn, Upwork, Facebook, or even in person.

Once you’ve got that dialed in, the clients will come to you, no matter where you’re fishing.

You Should Know...

Client-getting that feels like an unpredictable rollercoaster is a problem.

Once you fix it though, you get clarity, focus, and a system that works. Then you can start attracting clients instead of chasing them.

So why are you still chasing clients, any client? The ones who barely value your time, let alone your expertise.

Can I let you in on something? It's because you’re offering too many things.

Sounds counterintuitive if you think more services makes you more marketable.

Picture This.

You’re posting here and there on socials. You’re tweaking your profile and proposals. You might be throwing yourself at freelance sites like Upwork, buying connects and bidding on projects, all the projects.

But premium clients still aren’t hiring you.

It's because you’re not giving them something to say “Absolutely, yes!” to.

That’s the Problem.

You’re confusing them.

Let’s start with your services. Are they a buffet of randomness?

• “Social media strategy?" Typical, but what does that entail, exactly?

• “Logo design?" Sure, you've got Canva. Why not offer design services too?

• “SEO content writing?" Why not, if they'll hire you, you'll do it.

It's too many things, all unrelated. Like walking into a restaurant called 'Restaurant.' They hand you a menu with 200 mediocre items in multiple categories. Prices are right though!

The problem is it's overwhelming with options, underwhelming because none of them are especially good.

Not how you kick off a premium experience.

What's that you say? "But families with picky eaters would love a smorgasbord of options."

Yeah, but do you want to attract clients with multiple personalities? The ones who expect you to do everything?

Answer: You don't. Those clients are tough. They're looking for a cheap, order-taking, ass for the seat. Not the unique expertise you bring.

If they're looking for a Swiss Army knife of capabilities, let them hire an employee.

From you, premium clients want clarity in what they get. Not someone who might solve their problem.

They want a specialist. Someone who can confidently say, “I see your problem, and here’s how we fix it.”

The Truth.

Premium clients aren’t mythical creatures.

They’re out there, right now, looking for someone who...

1. Understands their pain points better than they do.

2. Communicates solutions clearly (no jargon, no fluff).

3. Delivers results, not just deliverables.

The best clients don’t have time to dig through a confusing list of services to figure out if you’re the right person.

With all the competition around you, if you’re not clear about what you offer, they’ll move on.

The Fix.

Package your services intentionally.

Most solopreneurs go wrong here. They focus on what they do (web design, email marketing, copywriting), not the results they deliver.

What do premium clients care about?

• Increasing sales.

• Saving money.

• Boosting efficiency (getting back their time for better results).

• Growing their audience.

• Solving a specific problem.

What don’t they care about?

• Your hourly rate.

• The breadth and depth of all the possible services you can provide.

• Whether you love dogs and coffee.

Package Like a Pro Instead.

Here’s what that could look like.

Starter Package: Intro engagements meant to deliver a quick win for new clients.

• “Website Audit: Find and fix 3 things hurting your conversions.”

Packaged Main Service: Your big, juicy offer. Your true and unique expertise that delivers a measurable result.

• “Sales Funnel Overhaul: Fix any leaks and double your leads in 90 days.”

Ongoing Support: A subscription or monthly retainer that keeps you in their corner.

• "Content Promotion Package: 4 blogs and 12 promo social posts per month.”

See what’s happening here? You’re not selling services. You’re selling solutions. And that’s what premium clients care about.

• Positioning matters. Packaging your services shows you are an expert, not just a warm body.

To many solopreneurs just starting out, sites like Upwork, Toptal and Fiverr (and 99designs and PeoplePerHour on and on...) offer an opportunity to get started fast.

And what's not to love? Quick gigs, easy money, and a steady stream of clients.

But as your skills blossom and grow, and your income goals begin to shift, those platforms start feeling less like an opportunity and more like a trap.

What used to be a solid strategy for getting clients isn’t cutting it anymore. Fees go up, quality projects dry up, and it’s harder than ever to find good clients with real projects.
